York Cellulose Pvt. Ltd., a leading manufacturer of hygiene and tissue paper products based in Yamuna Nagar, Haryana, is building environmentally responsible supply chains under its Feathers brand. Driven by a commitment to climate-smart operations, York set out to make its full material supply to one of its customers completely carbon neutral for the 2026 calendar year, positioning itself as a leader in sustainable material supply across India.

Challanges

Making a supply line carbon neutral is only credible if the claim is measurable, conservative, and independently verifiable. York needed to move from intent to a defensible, published result, and faced several hurdles:

 

  • Establishing the true cradle-to-grave footprint (Scope 3, Category 1 and Category 5) of two SKUs across 2,500 units and 675 kg, not a rough estimate.
  • Using year-matched, credible emission factors so the numbers hold up to external scrutiny.
  • Reflecting real Indian supply and landfill conditions instead of defaulting to UK assumptions.
  • Offsetting the footprint in full, including its upper uncertainty bound, with high-integrity credits.
  • Proving the claim: a transparent, traceable record the customer and third parties can independently verify.

Our Solution

Switch Climate Tech acted as York’s ESG and sustainability partner, taking the supply line from measurement to a verified, published carbon-neutral outcome:

  • Quantified the footprint following the GHG Protocol and ISO 14068-1, applying DEFRA 2026 year-matched emission factors, arriving at 1.69 tCO₂e.
  • Added a safety margin to account for real-world variation in Indian supply and landfill conditions, giving a conservative footprint range of 1.45 to 1.99 tCO₂e.
  • Prepared the full Carbon Neutrality Report, documenting scope, methodology, emission factors, exclusions, and results for the customer and all stakeholders.
  • Procured and retired 2 verified carbon credits (2 tCO₂e) from the Enercon Wind Farms in Karnataka Bundled Project (UCR Project ID 511), covering the footprint through its full upper uncertainty bound, with blockchain-recorded retirement for tamper-proof traceability.

  • Achieved certified carbon neutrality for York’s complete 2026 supply to its customer, with 1.69 tCO₂e of emissions offset by 2 tCO₂e of retired credits.
  • Secured high-integrity wind-power credits (UCR-validated, ACM0002 methodology, vintage 2024) supporting UN SDGs 7, 8 and 13, with Article 6 corresponding adjustments applied.
  • Established a fully traceable claim, with every credit uniquely serialised and publicly verifiable on the UCR registry.
  • Created a blockchain-traceable entry for the retirement, a permanent, tamper-proof record anyone can independently check.
  • Issued a carbon credit purchase and offset certificate any stakeholder can verify against the public registry and on-chain record.
  • Equipped the customer with verified supplier emission data to strengthen its own Scope 3 reporting.
